As early as the 1800s the mild climate and the Mediterranean vegetation in the Meran Basin at the foot of the Texelgruppe mountain range made Meran and its surrounding a famous spa town. The city at the river Passer, once known as "balcony towards the South" became a popular holidaying destination for famous people and the upper classes. Artists, writers and musicians found their way to Meran. It is here that Franz Kafka wrote his famous "Letters to Milena" and Bartók, Strauß, Rilke, Lehar and Schnitzler were also regular visitors in the town.
