The advent season in South Tyrol is one of the most impressive and atmospheric times of the year. The snow has begun to fall and all the children can hardly wait for Christmas Eve to arrive. Only the aroma of seasonal hot drinks and Christmas cookies can shorten the wait. They help usher in the customs, music and old traditions of the festive season in December. The Christmas markets of Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone and Vipiteno are very popular among visitors and locals alike.

Christmas markets
With more than 80 exhibitors and artists the "Christkindlmarkt" of Merano is the biggest one in the country. It provides a wide selection of Christmas gifts, ranging from Christmas decoration made of glass or ceramic, traditionally woven textiles, wooden carvings or woollen slippers to toys and pastries typical of the region. It is the local arts and crafts that really create a Christmas atmosphere. Once again this year the famous Christmas store of the family business "Käthe Wohlfahrt" from Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, will be among the exhibitors.
The Merano advent season will offer some interesting events in 2010. While choirs and brass bands give open air concerts, the centrally located Thermenplatz will be turned into a huge public ice skating area. Apart from that there will be a fantastic children's programme with chocolate making and many other activities.
